Superman 2 Just Scored Another Major Comeback — James Gunn Confirms a Fan-Favorite Return!

The DC Universe keeps expanding, and fans of James Gunn’s Superman just got hit with another huge update. While David Corenswet is already locked in to return as the Man of Steel in Man of Tomorrow, a surprising cast member has now confirmed they’re also coming back — and it’s making big waves across the fandom.

Superman 2 Just Scored Another Major Comeback — James Gunn Confirms a Fan-Favorite Return

Frank Grillo Confirms His Return as Rick Flag Sr.

Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr., revealed on Instagram that he’s officially returning for the 2027 sequel. He responded to an article about Peacemaker stars joining the next Superman movie and jokingly added that Gunn can’t get in trouble — because he’s the boss.

Grillo’s character has quickly become a major part of the DCU. He started in the animated Creature Commandos series, jumped into live-action for Superman, and plays a central role in Peacemaker season 2. His return signals that Gunn’s DC Universe will keep building deeper connections between its shows and movies.

Lois Lane Is Back With a Bigger Role

Grillo isn’t the only familiar face returning. Rachel Brosnahan is also back as Lois Lane. Gunn confirmed on Threads that Lois will have an “important role,” meaning her story will expand even more in the sequel.

Fans loved her sharp, confident version of Lois in the first film, so her bigger presence in Man of Tomorrow is great news.

Superman and Lex Team Up Against a Bigger Threat

Man of Tomorrow is aiming to start filming in 2026, and the plot teases something fans rarely see: Superman and Lex Luthor working together.

James Gunn already teased the setup:
“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together against a much, much bigger threat.”

Naturally, fans are guessing the villain could be Brainiac — one of Superman’s most dangerous enemies.

More DCU Projects Are On the Way

Superman isn’t the only one getting attention. DC Studios is working on a Jimmy Olsen spinoff series featuring Skyler Gisondo. The show will follow Jimmy and other Daily Planet reporters as they investigate cases involving superpowered villains.

Before Man of Tomorrow arrives on July 9, 2027, several other DCU titles will drop first:

  • Supergirl (June 26, 2026)
  • Clayface (R-rated film, September 11, 2026)
  • Lanterns on HBO (Early 2026)

The DCU Is Building Toward Something Bigger

With Frank Grillo, Rachel Brosnahan, and the main cast returning, Man of Tomorrow is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated superhero films of 2027. James Gunn’s DC Universe keeps expanding — and the next Superman movie looks ready to push the story into an even bigger, more connected era.
