New Theory Reveals the Only Way Star Wars Can Undo the Sequels
Some Star Wars fans still hope the sequel trilogy gets wiped from canon, even though it’s been almost ten years since those movies ended. The debate never really stopped. Many people still rank the sequels at the bottom of the franchise, and there are plenty of reasons why.
The three films didn’t flow together. Major story choices felt random. And the return of Emperor Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker made the whole saga feel messy. Even the new cast faced huge backlash as soon as they arrived.
Whether those opinions are fair or not, the sequels remain one of the most controversial parts of Star Wars. And that controversy raised one big question:

Anakin’s Force Ghost Raises a Huge Question
Anakin Skywalker’s absence in the sequels stands out more than ever today.
Star Wars has made it clear that Anakin’s Force Ghost stayed active long after Return of the Jedi. George Lucas even prepared for it by replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen in the Special Edition ending.
Ahsoka pushed this even further.
The show brought Anakin back as a Force Ghost—watching over Ahsoka and Sabine on Peridea. And with Anakin returning again in Ahsoka season 2, his presence is only growing.
That leads to a massive plot hole:
If Anakin was watching over the galaxy… why didn’t he show up during the sequels?
His own grandson, Ben Solo, was falling to the dark side. Kylo Ren was literally begging Vader’s helmet for guidance. If anyone had a reason to step in, it was Anakin.
The sequels never explained this. And that gap gives Star Wars a story opening—maybe the only opening they have left.
Where Was Anakin? Fans Have a Few Theories
One idea ties back to the Mortis Gods from The Clone Wars.
A major theory suggests that Anakin, Ahsoka, and even Baylan Skoll may take on the roles of the Father, Daughter, and Son — the three beings who represent balance, the light side, and the dark.
Ahsoka has a special connection to the Daughter. The Daughter saved her life. Baylan is already tracking the Mortis statues on Peridea. Anakin once acted as a “Chosen One” between the three during the Mortis arc.
If they all took those roles, it would explain why Anakin and Ahsoka were absent during the sequel era — they were no longer in the main galaxy at all.
It’s a cool idea. But it still doesn’t satisfy fans who want the sequels fully erased.
For that, Star Wars would need something bigger.
Could Star Wars Use the World Between Worlds?
The most powerful piece of Force lore we’ve seen in years is the World Between Worlds — the strange, timeless realm introduced in Rebels and revisited in Ahsoka.
Anakin interacted with Ahsoka inside it. Time bends there. Reality shifts. Doors to different moments appear like portals.
Because of that, some fans believe the World Between Worlds could split Star Wars into two timelines:
- Timeline A – Ahsoka, Mandoverse, Filoni stories
- Timeline B – Disney’s sequel trilogy
This would let both timelines exist without technically erasing anything.
But here’s the truth…
A Full Retcon Probably Isn’t Happening
Disney has no real reason to erase the sequel trilogy.
The new Star Wars movies in development all connect to those events — including Rey’s upcoming film.
The sequel characters are also deeply tied to Star Wars products, merch, and theme parks. Rewriting the entire trilogy would cause massive chaos across the franchise. That kind of rollback has never happened before, and it’s extremely unlikely now.
So yes, the World Between Worlds gives Star Wars a possible path to a retcon…
But don’t expect Disney to actually pull the trigger.
For now, the sequels stay canon — and any explanation for Anakin’s disappearance will probably come from the new shows, not a rewritten timeline.
